I have seen “Ordinary People” at least a dozen times over the past 17 years. I was 15 when I first saw it. It is one of a exiguous handful of films that I have turned relieve to over the years as I’ve grown for current insight and meaning with profound results (others include “Midnight Cowboy” and “Taxi Driver”) . Each and every time I stare this, I glimpse something novel and am unruffled deeply affected.

People and critics throw out the phrase “works on so many levels”. This is an ideal film to model that nebulous view. You could ask 50 people to mask it and ask them what they deem it is about, and you would fetch 50 different responses. You could ask those same 50 people to cloak it again in 5 years, and then ask them what they contemplate it’s about. You would score 50 different responses again. And so on and so on. You would accumulate “it’s about suicide”, “it’s about [someone] that dies”, “it’s about a family tragedy”, “it’s about teen depression”, “it’s about a icy mother”, “it’s about a dysfunctional family”, and on and on. These are all just (and then some) so it’s nearly impossible to characterize this film in a nutshell.

“Ordinary People” (the movie and the mountainous book from which it was adapted) shows us how families can go on for years and years (and even generations) without ever realizing or having to assess how everyone feels about one another. Some families net away with it, for things race smoothly on the surface. But sometimes things happen to atomize that facade. Could be an illness, a drug plight, a divorce, a death, whatever. Sometimes something so awful happens that a family is forced to face each other and sing the unspoken. But sometimes, the unspoken simply cannot be spoken, at least by some of the members.

That is the case with this family. The mother is so empty and emotionally sterile that it is certain she had never been a apt allotment of that family. At least outside of her first child. …The father struggled with his feelings, and wanted to section them, but probably felt unable to with such a cool, heartless matriarch in the family. And the… son didn’t know what… he wanted, and was caught somewhere between his mother’s sterility and his father’s earnestness. He was always trying to please both, never realizing that it would never happen with his mother. At least until [something happened], for which the guilt mounted and mounted (with miniature serve from his parents to abet) .

Watching these three characters (well, two, really, for the mother is emotionally arrested) cope with this tragedy and assess their positions in the family unit is so compelling and so wrenching that it’s almost voyeuristic. Robert Redford’s direction really does feel like we’re peeking into the windows of a family that we “know” down the block. Miniature did we know (or did they) what was really going on.

This is a somber movie; it is not a simple TV movie-of-the-week. It shows that serious afflict must be endured before pleasure can be found/regained. You can’t sweep anything under the rug. And honesty is a must in any family or relationship; communication is essential to its survival. There’s no intention around it. Sometimes the communication will lead you to the worst conclusion–that you simply cannot gather along–but the truth always prevails. Because only in truth can you even try to change/understand/improve things.

Technically speaking, this is superbly crafted. The acting is vivid, the direction is penetrating, the dialogue ranges from exuberant to shattering, and everything else is perfect. I’ve seen a lot of movies, and it smooth amazes me that one of the most grueling, heart-wrenching pieces of acting I have ever seen was by young Timothy Hutton. The search for of his face and the sound of his disclose will prance you apart. To me, that young actor carried the bulk of this heavyweight recount. He is nothing short of vivid here. Donald Sutherland, definitely a spacious actor, hasn’t been any better than this. To me, he is the ultimate portrait of the objective man struggling with his confusing role as a father and husband. And Mary Tyler Moore, of course, is frighteningly intense as the mother; it’s impossible to link this woman to Mary Richards. Immense wait on from everyone else, including the unbelievable Elizabeth McGovern (with a character that receives worthy more development in the new), and Judd Hirsch as the boy’s psychiatrist (their scenese together are bright) .

I can’t stress this film’s importance enough. It demands multiple viewings. It is a knowing example of how mighty insight film (and art in general) can shed on our lives if handled with care, taste, and realism. It covers ground that is universal to us all, regardless of family background. Don’t cheat yourself out of a profoundly challenging experience. And it honest might change your life. Now how many movies can you say that about?

(… This movie) won a Best Relate Oscar, so I figured it would be fine. I had no concept. Ordinary People is an improbable movie where nothing is as it seems. The title itself is ironic, because although the Jared family seems like your typical American family, they are by no means so. Mary Tyler Moore plays Beth, the emotionally retentive mother who would rather not face the unseen demons that are hasty tearing their family apart. Her performance captures the inner coldness and turmoil that is famous to the character. Donald Sutherland is also honorable as Calvin, the sociable father who feels somewhat responsible for the problems of the family and wants healing. The regret and sadness of his character shine through, what an obliging job. Judd Hirsch is Dr. Berger, the psychiatrist who helps the family try to heal. But the movie is stolen by Timothy Hutton, who plays the young son Conrad, who had previously attempted suicide. His portrayal of the anguished, emotionally wearisome Conrad is a virtuoso performance. Eventually, through the encourage of Dr. Berger, Conrad is able to finish blaming himself for the death of his brother and travel on with his life. Perhaps the most tension-filled scene in the movie for me was when Conrad found out that his friend had committed suicide and he goes into the bathroom and turns on the warm water and we recognize the scars on his wrists, and we can only wait to survey if he is going to try it again. Another thing, vivid direction by Robert Redford. Instead of using indulgent film shots or camera tricks, he unbiased allows the camera to focus on the action, the suitable arrive, even though he might have been tempted to try that kind of thing to expose himself in his first film. This is a sizable movie, one of the best ever made. Earn it the next one you spy. However, the DVD version is a miniature dreary (…) .

I worship this series. It is position in an incredibly rich, diverse world and told in a grand, compelling manner. The series shows its modern roots in so many areas, from the detail devoted to the Abh culture to the explanations of some of the sci-fi principles that underly this universe. It is hard to summarize, but the best arrangement I would recount it is as an exploration of the Abhs as a culture and the conflict that occurs when human and Abh meet. The legend is told through the experiences of Jinto, a human, and the Abh Lafiel as they are forced by fate into a coast together.

This second disc focuses mostly on the Abh, explaining their feudal system, top-notch lineage, vassals, relationships, etc. It is also where you learn a grand deal about Lafiel’s background and her plot of thinking, making her more human to us, yet showing us fair how differently the Abh behaves compared to normal humans. There is also a tall position battle in the first episode of this disc, but it is so deftly woven into the chronicle that it leaves the viewer moved by it.

Sadly, Jinto appears rather useless in this disc . Not to concern, Lafiel more than makes up for him in this one (I’d despise to regain on her poor side) and Jinto will have his time in the later discs.

This series is definitely different from the standard place anime handsome. It lacks the light humor of Nadesico or Captain Tylor and is far more character focused that Gundam. Action is not the focus – some episodes maintain no battles whatsoever. But it tells an incredibly fine tale, one that will plan you in until you cannot serve but feel for the characters and cheer them on as they grow.

This volume includes the conclusion to the Golrauth’s battle and the beginning of the Febdaush arc. Lamirh and Ghint narrowly dash death and land in the slight Barony of Febdaush. Princess Lamirh is welcomed, while no one really pays too remarkable attention to Ghint. With war brewing stop to the Barony, the Baron is keeping Lamirh as a trump card of sorts. There are other tensions developing within the limited Barony, paticularly, the Baron’s treatment of his subjects. The animation and music in this series are very well done. This series initially aired on cable TV in Japan and got a very apt budget. Gigantic artwork and a tantalizing political drama form this a must-buy for Residence Opera fans.

I am not Sharon Stone’s biggest fan and I did not inquire to like this movie when I saw it, but now I procure myself watching it every time it is on tv. Gene Hackman is colossal as the sadistic John Herod, he is even meaner than in Unforgiven. Russell Crowe gives a advantageous performance as Cort, and Crowe is finally getting the attention that he deserves as a serious actor. Sharon Stone’s role does not inquire of all that distinguished of her and she does what is expected of her. Leonardo DiCaprio exudes the appropriate amount of cockiness as the young upstart gunslinger. There are some pleasant minor roles in the film, including Lance Henriksen as Ace and Keith David as Cantrell, the man secretly hired by the oppressed townfolk to assume out Herod. The most dramatic moment in the film comes when he faces Herod and the townspeople bend their heads in prayer for salvation only to be disappointed as Cantrell comes to a brutal raze. Some of the other reviewers found the camera angles annoying and positive scenes unrealistic. Well, this movie doesn’t strive for realism. It is fraction send off of spaghetti westerns and fragment live action adult cartoon. If you look the movie in this spirit, you cannot wait on but like it.

The Fast and the Dreary has long been derided as a Sharon Stone star vehicle that flopped. However, there is powerful more to this film than meets the sight. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes, Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Sinise, Keith David, and Lance Henricksen, this film is a refreshing change from past takes on the western.

Stone plays a composed and comely gunslinger, reach out of the dusty plains to the town of Redemption, seeking revenge for the slay of her sheriff father years ago by the town dictator John Herrod, a gloomy and malevolent outmoded gunfighter intent on maintaining his stranglehold on the haunted populace by staging a mercurial blueprint contest, the better to publically eliminate any opposition to his rule, and to squash any hope of salvation. Drawn into this dismal contest are Herrod’s ragged partner turned preacher Cort, a man whose tortured soul unruffled seeks it’s have salvation, and who Herrod seeks to pull encourage to Hell. Herrord’s son, The Kid, enrolls in the contest as a draw to eye fame and glory, and to indicate himself to a level-headed and uncaring father. Thrown into the mix are a number of quick-witted characters approach to town to sight their hold fortunes and the fireworks ensue. There is strong symbolism throughout this film, shades of death and rebirth, considerable archetypal figures in the charaters of Herrod, the mighty demonic ruler of the underworld, and Cort, the misguided but eventual redeemer and saviour.

This film boasts a strong and talented cast that give some wonderfully scrumptious performances. Sam Raimi does an unbelievable job once again of producing a stylishly directed record of loss, redemtion, salvation, and revenge in this telling of the western as mdoern narrative.

“Care For of Siam” (Strand Releasing) which at first appears to be a ecstatic themed movie is actually more than that. It looks at and deals with the different kinds of relationships and acts of fancy between people and treasure in all of its forms. Aside from that the movie is about coming of age as the characters deal with their pasts and overcome worry. Family problems as well as the chronicle of two boys falling in savor are what we peep here. Tong and Mew are forced to confront loss–Tong lost his sister while Mew lost his grandmother. The center of the film is the elated care for fable about two schoolboys who fair happen to be tickled. But mixed in with this blissful care for narrative is the subplot of family pains.

When the movie begins both Tong and Mew have girlfriends that they have pains in relating to and the guys also have very strong feelings for each other The actors are admirable and this multi-layered family drama has something for everyone. Although the film comes in at over 2 hours, I was not bored for a microscopic but was certainly aware that a small cutting would accomplish this a tighter and more delightful film.

In the director’s commentary, Harris Goldberg says that people have responded to this movie for three reasons: 1) The Adore Legend. 2) The Actors’ performances and/or 3) For the depiction of Depersonalization. There are a core group of people who identify with the anecdote and are elated to discover depersonalization depicted on film. As Goldberg states, it tends to succor people to spy this movie and realize, “Oh, I’m not the only one.”

Matthew Perry performs admirably as Hudson Milbank. Hudson smooth knows what is staunch and what is not exact although the whole shebang doesn’t FEEL proper to him anymore. He can live “as if” he is blooming and in many cases people may not realize there is anything deplorable with him. If anything appears unfamiliar about him it is that he seems overly anxious, overly spacey, and that he tends to protest store clerks that life feels unreal. He seems intent on figuring out what is going on with him and to derive someone who knows what he is talking about. Anybody who has experienced depersonalization knows what this is like. I judge Matthew Perry, as well as writer/director Harris Goldberg, were good in playing less is more for most of this. There are also specific things in this portrayal which were particular and familiar, such as Hudson counting the number of days he’d lived and how many he was likely yet to live.

This is the first movie I grasp seeing where the main character has depersonalization disorder. (this is astonishing considering how many other conditions have been explored on film through the years.) I wonder if the world and others are catching up with the depersonalization experience and/or it is becoming more approved and/or understood. Or perhaps it is simply that more people are now using the diagnostic name. Writers have written about unreality and the dream-like experience of life for ages, as have meditators and mystics…(gape also all the movies about dreams, dream-like realities, life-being-like-a-dream) So is depersonalization a disorder, or a major factor of being human?

I assume people who want a cute Matthew Perry movie that is humorous and sweet may not regain entirely what they inquire. “Numb” could have been marketed more like another truthful and silly (as in the humor that comes from distress and from daily and mundane life as well) movie — The Savages.

In sound-bites Numb sounds like a movie about a man trying to obtain well in order to “obtain the girl” in a kind of angry straggle through psychiatry– Well, it is more complicated than that, and for one thing it seems more about a man who is trying to pick up well so he can feel alive and experience his life. Being in treasure is a large fragment of that, but you can’t feel anything when you are depersonalized, even when it is correct in front of you.

Although you may not judge it would be, this is a hopeful film.

** A couple asides: there are two other books about dissociation in addition to “Feeling Unreal” — called “The Record of Sanity” and “The Stranger in the Mirror” There may be more, but these are others I’ve found.

**To define something other reviewers mentioned, in the movie Hudson states he had a predisposition to depersonalization before he smoked marijuana, although marijuana, as well as some of the medications and antipsychotics he is prescribed later in the movie don’t seem to aid and/or exacerbate his sense of unreality.

**The interactions between Hudson and his parents are wonderful. Well-written, location on.

First of all, this isn’t really a romantic comedy.

You might be thinking that a movie starring Matthew Perry with a personality disorder would be a comic ha-ha movie in the vein of “Friends”, but you need to know that this movie is more a dramedy, with a darker type of humor.

Perry’s character Hudson Milbank suffers from Depersonalization Disorder (DPD), which is a true dissociative disorder in which affected people feel disconnected from their bodies, and have peril relating to reality.

Brought on by overenthusiastic smoking of the amusing cigarettes, Milbank’s life goes into a downward spiral, and his doctor recommends psychiatric treatment. He meets a girl named Sara (Lynn Collins) who seems drawn to guys with problems, and she becomes a beacon in his disassociated life. The thing is, can he maintain her?

The funniest moments occur during the sessions with the Psychiatrists, each with a original procedure for curing his pickle. In particular, gawk for Mary Steenburgen, in a microscopic, but attractive turn as Dr. Blaine.

It’s not so grand the scenes of horrific violence in themselves that compose one wince here (after all, presumably one has signed on for a hardcore violent thriller when ponying up to rent or capture this rank title), but it’s the frequent juxtaposition of disturbing violence with slapstick comedy that is the really unsettling thing. It’s really outlandish, for example, to peep a violent rape & assault immediately followed by a scene of two cops having to hitch a lag on a chicken truck, and (as if that weren’t enough) a few seconds later ogle the cops topple off the truck when it stops too posthaste. Very peculiar. Also, the piquant among you should be aware that this film isn’t nearly as polished or professional looking as the slick box art might lead you to possess. In other words, if you have no tolerance or appreciation for on-the-fly, low-budget guerilla film-making, avoid this at all costs. I DO have a sure affection for this type of film-making, and even I said “whoa, what were they thinking?? ” and “Wow, that’s really cheap looking (or sounding) ” several times during the course of this. Ultimately, however, I have to say that the movie is worth a search for, but it’s probably worth a sight more because it’s an enchanting bit of movie history than because it’s actually a first-rate movie.

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is Wes Craven’s startling debut as a no holds barred terror director. Unflinching in its depiction of torture, rape, and humiliation it can composed design audiences gasp almost thirty years after its initial release. This narrative of two young girls on their device to a concert and their misfortunate race in with four hazardous fugitives is principal viewing for any fan of the Fear genre. What really scared me in this film is the procedure the four villains had so mighty fun in demeaning and then killing the two girls. And how very halt support was… Slight Craven-esque quirks tended to pop up (such as a sudden shift from shameful violence to a scene of almost slapstick humor) that will remind viewers of the Elm Street and Roar series. As well as one of the killers names being “Krug” add an “er” and well, you figure it out. Support a glimpse out for the mother’s scene of revenge down by the lake, that alone is worth the impress of admission. Truly deserving of “cult” site!

Coming soon from Warner Brothers is a unique and different version of Christopher Marlowe’s “Edward II”. Do not be confused this is not the Derek Jarman film but a film adaptation originally broadcast by the BBC. It stars Ian McKellen and James Laurenson and was filmed almost 40 years ago. The production was hailed by the critics and it caused quite a sensation in the arrangement it portrayed the king’s birth controluality and it provided the first kiss by two men ever to seen on British television.

What is surprising is how current Marlowe’s play is even though in actuality it is over 400 years outmoded. Edward had a flawed rule and that is not only because he, himself, was flawed but his reign had to deal with civil war. What ultimately turned the nobles against him was not his ineptitude to rule but his Edward’s birth control life. The play begins when the king’s celebrated courtier, Gavezton, returns from having been exiled and his begin declaration of savor for Edward. His decision and refusal to give his like up is what provides the heart of the play and the tragedy that follows. The film is wonderfully acted and remains contemporary. It is a amazing ogle at the scheme new cheerful cinema began.

Wow, have I been hoping against hope that this production would one day fabricate it to DVD. I honest gasped out loud when I saw it popup! I’ve had an faded VHS tape that was taped off broadcast in 1975! Needless to say, it is very dilapidated out by now.

If you are a fan of McKellen or big classical theater, you’ve got to have this. Now, if the BBC would only keep out their tall “Wars of the Roses” series from the 60s (those customary VHS tapes are nearly feeble out too!), I would be grateful forever! Thanks again, BBC! Your collections of Chekhov, Ibsen and Noel Coward were improbable, and the fact that they are now putting out this Edward II is very admirable.

Watching this again many years after I first saw it, I expected to be disappointed. After all, the tall films of our youth sometimes turn out to be something less than we had imagined. But Mister Roberts does not disappoint. This is one of the gems of the American cinema, a poignant comedy featuring a multitudinously clever and luscious script by Frank Nugent and Joshua Logan from a original by Thomas Heggen made into a play by Logan and Heggen that ran for many years on Broadway. The movie features excellent performances from Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon. Fonda is particularly bright in the kind of role from which legends are made. (He also played the share on Broadway.) You can pick all your John Wayne classics and toss them overboard with the Captain’s palm tree. Henry Fonda as Lt (j.g.) Doug Roberts, cargo officer of the USS Reluctant, shines forth as the noblest hero of them all. He is a serene, strong, attractive, daring man in a record clear to mist up your eyes even if you’re watching it for the twentieth time.

Jack Lemmon won a supporting Oscar for his performance as Ensign Pulver, a kind of slothful, but slyly resourceful Walter Mitty type who talks a astronomical game but never follows through… James Cagney is the Captain, a sour, resentful man who mercilessly badgers Mister Roberts and grossly neglects the morale of his crew. He is honest perfect. The device he bellows “Mister Roberts!” or plot he trembles out the line, “Mister…Mister…this time you’ve gone too far” delights the audience. William Powell, in his last film, plays the ship’s wise and ever diplomatic doc with fair precision.

Marty (1955) starring Ernest Borgnine, a kind of politically proper (for its time) cherish sage about ordinary folk, won the Academy’s honor for best record in 1956, the year Mister Roberts was nominated. Henry Fonda, in perhaps his most beloved and certainly one of his finest performances, was not even nominated. Incidentally, Hollywood myth John Ford directed, but fell ill and Mervyn LeRoy–no trek himself (e.g., The Terrible Seed, 1956; No Time for Sergeants, 1958, etc.) –finished up.

There are a number of memorable scenes in the film, the kind recalled with delight. My accepted involves the crew, their binoculars and the nurses. I also loved the careful concocting of the “scotch whiskey” by Doc. The weekly letters requesting a transfer, the Hoot Gibson films we (thankfully) never glance, the ever worshipful palm tree, Pulver’s marbles in a tobacco tin that he shakes in Roberts’s face, vowing to point to his manhood by putting them in the captain’s overbin, his “firecracker,” his “If I could be with you/One hour tonight/To do the things I might/I’m telling you true/I’d be anything but blue,” the giddy nurses, and the disagreeable liberty are other unforgettable bits. But more than anything, what makes this a grand movie, are the indelible characters so very accurate to our experience, and how nicely they meld and dissimilarity.

This is, along with From Here to Eternity, Das Boot, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Caine Mutiny, Stalag 17, and Twelve O’Clock High, among my current movies to approach out of World War II. What sets Mister Roberts apart is the humor born of the boredom, frustration, and tedium that most truly characterizes life in the service. In this regard I retract a saying that goes something like this: “War is filled with long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of absolute dread.” The crew of the Reluctant got only the boredom.

This superb war comedy/movie will always be one of my personal favorites. Based on the WWII guideline, the basic premise is a rather anal boat captain trying to get “ship shape” a merchant/transport type ship. (in the Pacific) .

Henry Fonda (Wry humor..this movie IS him.)

William Powell (The thin man returns…his sarcasm is perfect here)

James Cagney (Does his talent ever demolish? One of his best roles)

Lemmon (Ensign Pulver), shows his talent for the position gag and, lets say, driftiness, early. This perfomance spawned a few sequels on Pulver alone.

If you were ever in the Navy, you will study Cagney’s Performance as uncanny, and gape a slight bit of each actor in your bear experience.

This is meant to be seen in its entirety. Its not chop to pieces for TV, and when seen in this format is like a original movie, meant to be seen from open to attain.

Highly recommended, and will be seen again and again

This is a musical remake of George Cukor’s classic “The Philadelphia Account”. The recent setting: the Newport Jazz Festival and the chic mansions on its surroundings. The record is exactly the same: Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly in her last film) is engaged to David (John Lund) . But her ex-husband (Bing Crosby) won’t let her go that easily. In the between, there are a couple of journalists (Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm) with problems on their contain.

This is one of those films where everything is ample. The whole cast is excelent. This is classical Hollywood in paunchy gear!!

The music by Cole Porter will leave you singing for days after you glimpse this movie: “Well, Did You Evah? “, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? “, “Cramped One”, “You’re Sensational” and the multi-million Dollar seller “Honest Admire” are gigantic tunes. The film has also a five-minute overture with music that is usually slice by television (titanic music!!!) .

This DVD comes with a tremendous pack of extras. But first… the image: resplendent Technicolor (it was shot in VistaVision) . The blooming soundtrack was remastered in Dolby 5.1 (it seems it was recorded only 10 years ago) . There is also a documentary on Cole Porter hosted by Celeste Holm herself! (calm comely after all these years) . There is a newsreel about the film’s premiere, Radio adds with Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby, Trailers (from both “High Society” and “The Philadelphia Sage”), Notes ……….and a large Cinemascope Cartoon “Millionaire Droopie”.

The only terrible thing about this DVD is that the subtitles dissapear during the songs (and there are 3 languages) .

Anyway… this a enormous film with all the elements at their peak!

Given the lack of fuss made over the centenary year of Bing Crosby’s birth, it appears that, as far as the public at colossal is concerned, Bing is limited more than a Christmas period section. The Sinatra performance is also solid, but there’s plenty of superb Sinatra elsewhere on film. What’s modern about this film is his “Well, Did Ya Evah? ” duet with Crosby. For years they had been radio rivals, the “faded pro” favoring crowd-pleasing “unexcited and easy” tunes and the skinny modern star emphasizing more urgent and dramatic material bewitching to the personal emotions of a fresh generation. Crosby is the “natural,” obedient of all sorts of gorgeous vocal elocutions and tricks; Sinatra is the driven, serious unique man, executing musical material with a no-nonsense advance. At one point, when Croz goes for one of his graceful swoops, Sinatra retorts, “Don’t Dig That Kind of Croonin’, Chum.”

But despite their powerful differences, and despite Crosby’s dominating veil presence (perhaps for the last time in his career), the two wind up as arm-in-arm, complementary musical partners for what indeed is one of the swellest parties in the history of film.
