This comprehensive HBO presentation documents the history of heavyweight boxing through the 20th century, beginning with Jess Willard’s victory over Jack Johnson in the early 1900s and running through the reign of the controversial Mike Tyson. As well as being an overview of the Sweet Science, however, Kings of the Ring probes the private lives of the champs and the travails that they faced outside the ring, with special attention to the context of their times and the roles that the fighters played in reflecting and shaping society. Undoubtedly Max Baer’s and Joe Louis’s victories over Max Schmeling in the 1930s carried some political weight as the unwilling symbol of Nazi Germany was pummeled by both Americans. Some 30 years later, Cassius Clay’s personality, brash attitude, and superior skills in the ring brought him attention. That attention turned to controversy when Clay joined the Nation of Islam, changed his name to Muhammad Ali, and was jailed for refusing to go to Vietnam. Also, no history of 20th-century heavyweight boxing would be complete without the occasional freak show, such as the Italian strongman Primo Carnera boxing with a kangaroo before being taken apart by the much smaller Max Baer. There is, of course, plenty of thrilling fight footage to go around as well, with boxers such as the wild Jack Dempsey, the remarkable Rocky Marciano, and Ali’s astounding speed and footwork. The climax of the film recreates John Harlin’s 5,000 ft fall during the historic winter ascent of the Eiger Direct in 1966. Filming Eric Jones on his solo climb was almost as great a challenge to cameraman and filmmaker Leo Dickinson, who had to be lowered from a helicopter to Death Bivouac, high on the mountain to capture Eric’s progress on film. This film also contains rare interviews with Heinrich Harrer, Anderl Heckmair, Don Whillans and Adolf Rubi. “Eiger Solo” is probably the best of its genre on the subject and thoroughly deserves to be! regarded as a masterpiece of a mountaineering film, it will thrill and inspire both serious climbers and armchair mountaineers alike.

Penny Marshall’s popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball Leagu. The leagu was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men’s baseball teams. The AAGPBL continud after the war (until 1954), and Marshall’s movie depicts the leagu in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They’re all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O’Donnell. It’s a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall’s never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie’s filled with memorable moments, witty dialogu, and agreeable sentiment.
